DEAD GIRLS DON'T CRY
The film opens with Bubba (Scott Barrows) and Daisy (Lauren Parkinson) as you typical sibling cannibal twosome. In a subplot, John (Bret Roberts) likes to kill women after sex, especially those with tattoos. When the two meet I was expecting something like "Psychos in Love" but it fell short in dark comedy.

The film had some aspects to distinguish it from the genre. One was that Bret Roberts performed his own songs during the film. While not overly memorable, they were certainly topical. The second aspect was the tattoo nudity. The naked victims were porn star Bonnie Rotton and Malice McMunn both famous (or infamous) for their body art work. It seems our siblings had some daddy issues which were not explored and will most likely come out in the prequel after they run the sequels into the ground...if I know the film industry...and I don't.

The main problem I had with the film is that on screen Bret Roberts looks like Chris Cleveland who looks like John...
APPETITES Is Basically An Exercise In Debauchery
Every now and then, some Hollywood director gets up on his (or her) high horse and decides it’s time for the next great American crime film. Generally, that director has something he (or she) wants to say about living the criminal life; and – in the process – the storyteller treats audiences to an endless parade of debauchery all for the purposes of shocking and awing those watching. It’s a trick meant to indict the audience for playing the role of the voyeur, but with APPETITES I’m not entirely certain director Cameron Casey wanted the audience to feel bad. In fact, I’m not sure Casey wanted you to feel anything. I think he just wanted you to sit back and enjoy the ride.

(NOTE: The following review will contain minor spoilers necessary solely for the discussion of plot and/or characters. If you’re the type of reader who prefers a review entirely spoiler-free, then I’d encourage you to skip down to the last three...
Not Your Average Boy Meets Girl Story!
This is not your average boy meets girl story! (Daisy) is a cannibal who along with her mentally challenged brother Bubba, hunt and kill men for food and fun.(John Doe) is a serial killer who kills women that in his words have "Defiled their bodies" with tattoos.

They meet not knowing each other is a killer...But Daisy has a small tattoo and John Doe looks tasty so who will get the best of whom?

The acting is perfect for this over the top Campy film. There is some gore, most of it implied but not outright shown. The effects are hit or miss. Some work, some fail!

It's fun if you're not looking for anything serious and want to escape for an hour and forty five minutes.

Disturbing despite itself
Bazaar Bizarre is a strange little film. A mixed beast, partially a brutal documentary about a very heinous serial killer, Bob Berdella, and partially a campy festival of BADLY acted reenactments and worse music (it's from Troma, what do you expect?) the movie manages to be seriously disturbing despite its' infinite cheese. The segments of actual interview footage with the police, court reporters, and Berdella himself present a case riddled with problems--not least homophobia and a nonchalant attitude toward the disappearences of male prostitutes--and Berdella himself one of the most cold, unsympathetic characters one could interact with. Against this chilly backdrop, we get occasionally laugh-out-loud reenactments with B-movie acting, copious nudity, poor special effects and the omnipresent Terrible Music. It shouldn't work, but somehow it does. At the end, you'll ask yourself what the hell you just watched, but it's still worth watching. There's a lot of food for thought in...
Needs to be edited 50% down to a normal movie.
There's a normal documentary in here somewhere, but there's so much weird padding and prurience mucking up the ediing, I just gave up about a quarter in. And, there's some unnecessary frontal nudity of an injured, terrified young man that's pretty darn disrespectful to the victims and their survivors. And, why the band (who, no doubt, are someone's brother-in-law's buddies or something) keep showing up is beyond me...

sex crime story and that's why mags like True Detective
This thing appeals to the voyeurist in all of us. Some more than others, but everybody likes a sick, perverted, sex crime story and that's why mags like True Detective, the tabloids like National Inquirer, UTube, and other sensationalist productions like Ripley's, "Believe It or Not" have been around for a long, long time. People love a train wreck, hang around fires, will stand on streets for hours watching some poor devil threaten to jump from Hotels and High Rise Buildings. The lurid, freaky and strange attract us humans like flies to a dead body or decaying hunter's kill! We, as a species can't admit it, but it's true we love blood, gore and the disgusting spectacle. That's the appeal of Mr. Elroy's journalistic bent and he knows that better than many and has made beaucoup bucks marketing it!

A prequel to "Stone Cold" in the series of Jesse Stone novels by Robert B. Parker, the story picks up after Jesse Stone is fired from the Los Angeles Police Department. He becomes an unlikely candidate recruited by the town board of selectman to become police chief of Paradise, a small town on Boston's North Shore. The board hopes his failed experience will keep him from digging too deep into the town's secrets. Hungover on his first day on the job, he must investigate a domestic abuse case that ends up leaduing to a money laundering scheme perpetuated by a manager of a local bank. How Tom Selleck's world-weary cop Jesse Stone became the police chief of sleepy Paradise, Mass., is revealed in this engaging prequel to the first made-for-TV Stone feature, Stone Cold (2005). Selleck is once again well cast as the rough-around-the-edges Stone, whose drinking problem gets him ejected from the Los Angeles police force; he soon finds himself the head lawman in a small New England fishing village, where his slow dissolution continues until a routine domestic disturbance case reveals connections to money laundering and murder, with several of the town's most affluent names as possible suspects. Selleck is well-matched by veteran scene stealer Saul Rubinek, and there's good work by Polly Shannon as a city attorney who becomes Stone's romantic interest, and Stephen Baldwin as an ill-tempered local. Fans of author Robert B. Parker (on whose books the Jesse Stone films are based) and Selleck won't be disappointed by this smart thriller. --Paul Gaita

Review :
Great production values
I'll skip commentary on the plot or Tom Selleck. Most people have covered these very well. My perspective is production quality. Generally, television movies are merely okay when judged by music and camera work. After all, the little screen is cheaper than the big screen. The stunning production of the Jesse Stone series sets it above anything seen ever.

I would love to know the location setting. I was born and raised in MA and can't imagine a village like Paradise within commuting distance of Boston. The entire North and South Shore above and below Boston are teeming with residents so tightly packed that merely setting off to pick up milk takes resilience and cunning.I'm thinking that it's really Canada or the state of Maine.

It's the harsh and compelling scenery of the shoreline wrapping around the tiny town of Paradise that sets the appropriate mood for the brooding and iconoclastic new police chief, LA fugitive Jesse Stone. Gorgeous, sunny fall days full of...
Stone Prequel
Excellent lead in to "Stone Cold". Tom Selleck does a great job as Stone in this prequel to the first movie. The back story of him being fired because he drank on the job shows he has a murky past. Him driving to Paradise, and us getting a chance to see character development, is good. He finds some suspicious events tied to the previous sheriff of Paradise, and a good lead as to why the sheriff is retiring early. When he handles a case of a battered wife, he finds the husband is hiding something. If that isn't enough, Jesse's dog Boomer has failing health. It is handled with a sensitive touch. Especially if you have been through it. If you enjoy this be sure to catch the other two movies "Stone Cold" and "Death in Paradise" based on Robert Parker books. You may like "An Innocent Man" as well. It is a drama with Selleck being falsely accused of a crime and then being sent to prison. Tom Selleck is a great actor. Often underappreciated as far as I'm concerned. I have enjoyed ninety...
Selleck is Jesse Stone
Tom Selleck is absolutely perfect as Jesse Stone, a character created by the great crime author Robert Parker. Selleck plays a burned out, alcoholic cop who takes a job in the small town of Paradise, Massachusetts as sheriff. "Night Passage" is the tale of the quest by the emotionally damaged Stone for the killer of a young girl. William Devane costars as Jesse's shrink and he is excellent. Terrific secondary characters. In my opinion, Parker's Jesse Stone series of novels eclipses his famous Spenser books. This story line is the prequal to CBS's fabulously successful "Stone Cold", Selleck's first outing as Jesse Stone. Grab "Night Passage" . . . the Jesse Stone made-for-TV movies are quality productions with superb acting and beautiful cinematography. Stunning music. Exceptional TV. Highly, highly recommended. You don't ofter see TV this well done these days. You must also pick up Stone Cold one of the best ever...

the Eyes of Murdoch
I 'discovered' this series about 8 months ago and can not get enough of it. The stars of this program, although unknown to most Americans are well known and appreciated in Canada, where this series originated and was filmed, for the most part. The often humorous references to the beginnings of many inventions that Murdoch either builds or works with the inventors on, are wonderful. Yannick Bisson plays Murdoch and heads a terrific cast. All kinds of speech accents flourish throughout the dialogue since many of the men and women who lived in Toronto at that time were immigrants from 'across the pond' and are in fact in real life. The story lines always are full of tongue in cheek humor, and subplots as these characters build not only relationships with one another, but with the viewer. I feel like I know these folks in real life, and with few exceptions, would love having them as neighbors. One of the things I like most is the constant politeness of the speech used, as well as what my...
Forensic Detection In 19th Century Canada
I recently came across The Murdoch Mysteries after seeing Geraint Wyn Davies portray Sir Arthur Conan Doyle in an episode from the first season. With two of my favorites so combined, I had to look further into this very intriguing historical crime drama. To date, I have watched most of the series, and while I was lukewarm about some of the earlier episodes, did stick with it and now find the scripting and plots to be stronger with each ensuing season. Instead of losing steam, Murdoch Mysteries is gaining it, not only in terms of solid story lines but in the development of the characters, who are fleshed out and exude true personality. Speaking of which, Dr Ogden fans should find she sparkles better than ever here.

Never mind there are innumerable crime dramas to choose from, with most of them being pale intimations or knock-offs so that despite being an avid mystery reader, I rarely watch any of them. There is nothing cliched or trite about Murdoch Mysteries. It offers...

AN AMAZING, POWERFUL FILM!
"Amazing Grace" is an exceptional film that chronicles the amazing true story of William Wilberforce, the man who spent twenty years in the British Parliament fighting to end one of mankind's greatest injustices: the slave trade. The film features powerful performances by an outstanding cast, including Ioan Gruffudd ("Fantastic Four," "King Arthur," TV's "Horatio Hornblower") as Wilberforce, whose faith and courage drove his fight for social justice. Albert Finney gives an amazing performance as John Newton, the former slave-ship captain turned pastor, and writer of the beloved hymn "Amazing Grace." Michael Gambon, Romola Garai, Youssou N'Dour, Rufus Sewell, and Nicholas Farrell give outstanding supporting performances.
The rest of the crew does a fantastic job of bringing the world of 18th/19th Century Britain to life. "Amazing Grace" is an amazing film that shows how men of faith can truly help change the world. Amazing Grace, indeed!
Grade: A

Superb
There is not much I can add to the previous review as far as importance and story. A period costume piece this film most certainly is not: it's a timeless story of the triumph of good, determination, and perseverance, and a very human telling. Well-written, beautifully scored, finely acted and gorgeously filmed, "Amazing Grace" is a treat for the eyes as well as a balm and inspiration for the heart. I must give kudos to the excellent makeup team - they've done an exceptional job with the entire cast, particularly Ioan Gruffudd (Wilberforce) and Benedict Cumberbatch (William Pitt), both of whom portray men often battling illness and addiction throughout the film. As a former makeup artist I am very impressed with their work, especially with regards to ageing the characters.

The cinematography is beautiful and lush as well, rich with texture and very fine small touches. The colour is gorgeous. Some of the images will stay in my mind for some time! The score - which I...
Absolutely AMAZING movie!
I've long been a fan of William Wilberforce - a man that God used greatly for a great cause: the abolition of slavery and the reformation of manners into the English society. Working at a private Christian school, I often refer to Wilberforce as an example to our students of what God can do with one man wholly committed to Him. In fact, I took sixteen of our students to see the movie when it was released and it had a very profound impact on their lives and thinking -- they saw with their own eyes the struggle of Wilberforce's life, the great cause to which he gave himself fully, and the great joy that comes from a life given in service to the King of Kings.

While I strongly recommend that all Christians watch this movie, parents I'll warn you that the issue of slavery isn't easy to watch or understand at a young age -- I would recommend this movie to middle school students and older, but probably not elementary-aged students.

There are some wonderful resources...

I wished upon a star and my dream came true!
Now this is the way it should be. You get all three cuts, all remastered in 5.1 surround and all have been digitally transferred. Thank you so much Mr. Spielberg because this without a doubt has to be one of your best (along with the original ET).

Last night, I watched the original theatrical version and forgot how much was removed for the "Special Editions" and the final "Director's Cut". In my mind, the original version is the best and to finally have it in all it's uncut 5.1 surround sound (which didn't exist back then) glory is simply wonderful.

The packaging is nice, although I found it very difficult to remove the DVDs without fearing I might snap them because the locking mechanism seems to not want to let go of the DVDs no matter how hard I press down on them. I suppose I could look at it in that I shouldn't fear them coming off during shipping and getting scratched up.

The box is nicely designed and inside are some wonderful items. It comes...

This two-disc set features a THX-certified 2.35:1 anamorphic widescreen transfer of Spielberg's (so far) favored cut of the film (the third!), dubbed the "Collector's Edition" after its 1998 release on VHS and laserdisc, and runs 137 minutes. The anamorphic transfer is minted from a hi-def transfer created at Sony's DVD center in Culver City, California and cleaned up for this release. The disc features both Dolby Digital and DTS 5.1 soundtracks, the 102-minute "The Making Of Close Encounters Of The Third Kind" documentary by Laurent Bouzereau created for the 1998 laserdisc, a collection of additional deleted scenes, a featurette on the film's enduring place in the sci-fi film pantheon entitled "Watch The Skies" (which, coincidentally, was the original working title for Spielberg's opus), talent files, and two theatrical trailers. Note that the still gallery on the laserdisc will not be carried over to the DVD. The set also comes packaged in Columbia's...
A must-own Blu Ray Title!
I bought a Blu ray player a few months ago. At 39 years old I was really hoping to see some of my favorite movies in this new HD format. Some movies seem to really benefit from this format (Kubrick's re-releases, Fifth Element, etc.). And some movies don't seem to take full advantage of the HD format.

So it is with great pleasure that I say that this edition of Close Encounters of the Third Kind is quite simply "amazing!" Yes, the film is 30 years old. And some grain is to be expected. But wow, what a transfer! The colors pop off the screen. The contrast is nice and sharp, but not in a bad way. The dark scenes are virtually flawless. The color tones and overall look of the entire film is breahtaking. The audio easily makes this a reference Blu Ray disc and will really test your system.

I'm not sure how much of the look of this film is due to the recent digital remastering and how much is simply due to the HD format, but the end result is enough to give...

The Closer: The Complete Seventh Season

Don't miss the final season of the critically acclaimed series starring Emmy® winner Kyra Sedgwick as Deputy Police Chief Brenda Leigh Johnson, a top-notch investigator who has put some of Los Angeles' most brutal killers behind bars. With her keen investigative instincts and brilliant interrogation techniques, Brenda often closes her cases by eliciting a confession or cornering a suspect through sometimes-questionable methods. Now, her career may be on the line as a result of her frequently unorthodox methods, and her tactics are coming under the scrutiny of the L.A.P.D.'s new Chief of Police (recurring guest star Courtney B. Vance – Law & Order: Criminal Intent) who is on the verge of announcing an extensive reorganization that could spell the end of Major Crimes. Joining the series - and the extraordinary Screen Actors Guild Award–nominated cast - in a starring role this season is two-time Oscar® nominee Mary McDonnell (Battlestar Galactica) as Captain Sharon Raydor.

]]>Kyra Sedgwick goes out with a big twanging bang in the seventh and final season of The Closer. And did you expect anything less? The Closer has consistently been one of TV's smartest police procedurals, with an ensemble cast of top-notch characters. But of course it's anchored by Sedgwick's LAPD Deputy Chief Brenda Johnson, who's equal parts neurotic, charming, and laser-focused as a detective. Sedgwick's Johnson is likable, yet exasperating; admirable, yet sometimes slightly ridiculous; responsible, yet occasionally flaky. It's a delight to see a character so well written and well acted in such a mainstream TV series. In the final season, the storylines are compelling and fresh, and sometimes disturbing. One story arc this season involves an especially bloody mass slaying at a ritzy mansion where hip-hop stars are known to hang. As always, the supporting cast adds credibility and richness--and the camaraderie among the Major Crimes unit is utterly believable. Standouts include G.W. Bailey as crusty Lt. Provenza; Michael Paul Chan as the dependable Lt. Tao; J.K. Simmons as Assistant Chief Will Pope; and smooth talker Tony Denison as Lt. Flynn. Johnson's family is also a delight. Her endlessly patient husband, FBI agent Fritz Howard (Jon Tenney), plays off Johnson's frazzled workaholism. And as her parents, Frances Sternhagen and Barry Corbin appear only rarely, but always memorably. The boxed set includes loads of great extras that any fan of The Closer will savor: deleted scenes, a gag reel that shows just how much fun the cast is having after seven years of working together, and a terrific roundtable feature of the cast and crew talking, no holds barred, about what they believe is the appeal of The Closer. Fans know the answer to that: All of the above. Thank yew! --A.T. Hurley

The Closer-Intelligent, Well-written & Superbly Acted
There are only 4 television shows I actually watch and for 7 years, this has been one of them. I have waited for each new season and watched each episode avidly. Kyra Sedgewick is amazing - alternately sweet and savage and always, always, always driven by a purpose - get a confession. She is sensational in this role but she does not stand alone. Each of the cast members has grown and changed over the last 7 years, each contributes to the overall show.

And while praising the series, you cannot forget the writers who have had a wonderful run with The Closer.

The two part episode where Brenda, Fritz, Flynn and Provenza travel from Atlanta to LA in her parents RV with an armed robber in custody is funny, poignant and finally forces Brenda to tell her Mom what she really does day in and day out as the Deputy Chief of one of the largest police forces in the country. Well-written and superbly acted, the closing minutes of this episode bring tears to the eyes of all...
LOVE LOVE LOVE The Closer
This is quite possibly the best show on TV (in my opinion). I love the cast, I love the writing. I keep thinking, they can't possibly do better than what they've done. And, every show is just more and more incredibly great!

Keeps Getting Better
Most series go into a decline by the fourth season but there are ocassionally a few that do keep your interest beyond the fourth or fifth season. Very few improve. Closer is one that does. The seventh season finds the great cast clicking like a machine, with all the quirks of the characters we have come to care about continuing (I do miss Daniels and was sorry to see her go). The scripts are a nice mixture of drama and comedy as we have come to expect from Closer. The show revolves around Kyra Sedgwick, the head of the Major Crimes division, but several episodes allow the cast members to take center stage. Very nice. This is the best season yet. If you like Closer at all you will really like this season.

The first time I remember seeing Kyra Sedgwick was in Tai-Pan in 1986, who would have expected that young lady to evolve into this gorgeous woman. She just keeps getting better looking every year.

The eight season is scheduled to be the last, I expect they will...
