INTERESTING, FOR ONE-TIME RENTAL ONLY
Interesting documentary. Female narrator speaks throughout, in English with British accent. There are no written subtitles, for hearing impaired. The documentary gives an overall view of the way of life, history, business, traditions, rules, etc. At one point, it focuses back and forth on a certain maiko and her maiko life and regular-girl life. There are interviews with certain male teahouse clients, that are on the elite list allowed in to the teahouses. There is traditional Japanese background music throughout the documentary. The current life of a geisha/maiko now and many years ago, are also discussed. There were parts here and there that seemed to drag on, or weren't interesting. As for my own taste, if they interviewed more geiko/geisha and more maiko, it would have been more interesting. Also, if they showed the geiko/maiko life, from sunrise to sundown (following one certain girl, for example), it would have given a more personal idea of what it's like to be in the...

I enjoyed the movie very much. It was a good story line, integrating the cultural mystery, preciseness, beauty and of geisha. I will watch it again. Very beautiful!

A Fantastic Documentary!

I have read Mine Iwasaki's auto-biography as well as Arthur Golden's "Memoirs of a Garish" which is also said to be about Ms. Iwasaki's experiences. This documentary is also quite good and a fairly decent glimpse into the forbidden world of a modern day Geisha and just exactly how intense an ancient art form it truly is. I have lived in Japan and had spent a considerable amount of time in Kyoto, specifically Gion, in order to get a more in depth glimpse into that fascinating world. This documentary successfully does just that. I do wish it went a bit deeper and more detailed, but that is just a personal wish and in no way a slight to the quality of production or content of this film. Highly recommended and very interestingand fun to watch. (I also highly recommend Ms. Iwasaki's books, as well!)

Moving film with heart
It's hard to review this without giving the story away too much. It is a story about love and relationships: not just romantic relationships but between parents and children. It has its light romantic side in among that.
However it also has deeper messages for Indian traditionalists. I gather that traditionally many Indian women do not remarry when they are widowed but are condemned to live a perpetual bereavment with their in-laws.
The movie challenges traditional values and looks to a higher wisdom and greater heart as relevant principles when this happens. So it is also a compassionate movie. It is also about putting ones own ego aside for the sake of others happiness and coming from love instead.
Amitabh Bachchan plays a man of great wisdom, heart and integrity and anchors the movie. It is a moving performance. The other actors similarly do a solid job. A lot is asked of Rani Mukerjee and she rises to it with a breadth of acting and response.

Baabul Dvd has sound issues, you can't hear the dialogs well from the middle, picture quality is good and sub tiles are Ok.

Well-acted movie portraying different facets of love
"Baabul" stars iconic Bollywood film star Amitabh Bachchan as a progressive father-in-law who displays true love and understanding towards his widowed daughter-in-law {Rani Mukherjee] after his son [Salman Khan] is killed in a car crash. Despite societal conventions that typically dictate a widow is to spend the rest of her natural life in mourning for her dead husband, a society that disdains the idea of remarriage [yes, even in contemporary society], this father-in-law tries to get his daughter-in-law a new lease on life by encouraging her to love again , in the form of John Abraham, her old friend who has loved her for years.

Though this film had its good points it's basically an imitation of a much better film by the Polish director Krzysztof Kieślowski. The Wikipedia entry says this film is an "adaptation" of Kieślowski's film titled A Short Film About Love. I'd call it more a copy, one cld even justifiably call it a rip off. If you want to see this story done much better in half the time look at the original. Kieślowski was an artist, an innovator and I felt rather offended that his name was no where in the credits of Koirala's version.

A film that was ahead of its time
If ever a film deserved to be re-mastered to today's standards Khamoshi The Musical gets my vote. Putting aside the 1996 film quality and sound - I was completely absorbed. I can see very clearly why it wasn't a " blockbuster" at the box office because the theme of the movie wasn't that family-oriented nor was it filled with " entertainment." Khamoshi The Musical is thought provoking and deals with issues that Indian Cinema is NOT noted for: abortion, pre-marital sex, and physical disabilities. You should know that this film did receive critical acclaim and many awards in 1996. The two main characters are deaf- therefore you have to rely on them to convey emotion which they did so elegantly and with power. Annie the "hearing" daughter is caught between two worlds and two cultures and handled that role so beautifully. This film is 16 years old. When I look at the Salman Khan of Ek Tha Tiger, and I look at the character Raj which he played in this film, I can see the growth and...
Great Movie

Rented this movie. The qulity was good and the movie played without any problems. A great movie starring Salman Khan and definitely worth watching. It is romantic and shows a strong family unit.

Lovely film

I am a huge Salman Khan fan therefore seeing all his movies is my goal.I thought this movie was excellent.It was romantic and emotional I felt the anger the girl felt.I understood the fear the parents had and the resentment they held onto and letting go.Family oriented movie old traditional values and despite all the turmoil still love and respect being human and making mistakes finding common ground and above all loving one another through it all.
Out of all the movies I have seen of Salman Khan his role in this movie was the most passionate and romantic.He definately knows how to act a romantic role.Take it from his fans he is a good actor and anyone who follows him as a fan knows a genuine human being in real life that he is and alot of his values come out in his acting.
A good movie worth watching I love Indian movies.
