Charles Lamont as a director is more well known for his classic comedies and this film is a rare departure for him from his usual Shirley Temple fare. In this effort he tries to create a suspensful murder mystery and succeeds very well. He does so using almost no stars. He's helped along by a very strong script that kept be guessing to the end and the fact that he clearly had more money to work with than most guys of the film noir era. A top notch job all around.

The Love Light is an excellent Mary Pickford vehicle that packs incredible amounts of action and adventure into the total running time of 89 minutes. This taut drama focuses on the life and times of Angela Carlotti (Mary Pickford) just before the First World War, during the war and thereafter. The acting is rather good although there are a few times when some of their "faces" are exaggerated; and the plot held my attention every step of the way. The music that goes along with the film could have been better but it doesn't truly lessen the value of the film.

When the action begins, Angela Carlotti is seen with her brothers Mario (Eddie Phillips) and Antonio (Jean De Briac). They tease the amorous Giovanni (Raymond Bloomer) who pines away for Angela even though she does not return his love. Unfortunately, war breaks out and Angela's two brothers go to serve much to Angela's chagrin.

Granted there were a fair number of little girl roles in Pickford's career, but there were also many films, like The Love Light, where she played fully realised adult characters. But whether playing children or adults, she always made the audience care about her. This ability to evoke sympathy is the secret to Pickford's acting and the reason why her films can still be such a wonderful emotional experience. As Angela she has moments of great comedy, including a very funny dance sequence, but what makes this role so special is the dramatic acting. Pickford shows the despair of wartime life. This release gives us a film, not just with America's Sweetheart, but written and DIRECTED by Frances Marion who wrote more screenplays than any other woman in screen history. The musical accompaniment starts out quite nice and eventually nearly drove me crazy. But you can always turn it off. The film is worth it.....

Bad and poor quality

This is not just a bad movie (especially since it spent the first 20+ minutes with some narration and videos of the whole "war is bad" stuff of the 70's), but the actual DVD is the worst "quality" (and I use that term loosely here) I have ever seen. Grainy and blurry, like watching a 30 year old, deteriorating VHS copy. Even going so far as to have a gap in the movie at around 32 minutes in!
Over all, this is another bad movie from a terrible time period for sci-fi (pre-Star Wars). Giving this movie a 1 star is being way too kind - it deserves no stars.

Mow the lawn instead

Mow the lawn, take the dog for a walk, pick the lint out from between your toes...ANYTHING EXCEPT WATCH THIS MOVIES. It's absurdly stupid...Do not waste your time on this.

Not worth the time

I never finished watching the video so I will not comment on the actors and their roles. However, the movie moved very slowly so as to not hold my interest. The quality of the video was extremely poor to the point that even if the movie had kept my interest I wouldn't have stayed with it.

Spider-women lure men to their death in this thriller from the golden era of Drive-in schlock!  This story of a mad scientist (Jackie Coogan) is regarded as one of the worst movies ever made.  Still, dig the crazy guitar and piano score which was purloined by Ed Wood Jr. for Jail Bait, and notice a couple of Wood regulars (Dolores Fuller and Lyle Talbot) in the credits. OF MICE, SPIDERS AND FREAKS
A difficult and preachy film that falls into that slender catagory of 1950's sci-fi/horror set outside the United States and in Mexico - South of the Border chillers (KRONOS is another) - where the labor was cheap, the deserts always dry and the talent always in a sweat. The story behind MESA is simple enough - a mad doctor has crossed the power of a spider with the sexual wiles of the female form - creating a labor force of immortal, super strong and mute women who do his every bidding, biting and killing for... reasons unknown. Like all mad scientists he simply does what he does because he can... no reason needed. While MESA comes up short in many ways (is it a cautionary tale? Is it an environmental feature?), it does have it's moments - the best being found in Harmon Stevens performance as Dr. Leland Masterson - a man turned mad by the experiments of Dr. Arana (our evil villian) - whose performance is a near exact copy of Lon Chaney Jr. as "Lenny" in OF MICE AND MEN...
Average DVD of legendary Z-chiller
I would have to include Mesa of Lost Women in that unique subgenre of "is it spellbindingly awful or just awful?" (members of which include The Creeping Terror, Beast of Yucca Flats, They Saved Hitler's Brain, Teenage Devil Dolls, Battlefield Earth, etc.). Bad movie fans may find this a scream, or merely dull depending on their taste and mind-set at the time of viewing (and how many Carl Dreyer films they've made it through). No rants please, I love Carl Dreyer movies. It is fairly slow-moving, even for a poverty-stricken 50s thriller, and that guitar-and-piano score has the potential to put the most stable person in the rubber room. That said, the plot, dialogue, characterizations, etc. are so loony that there is much to marvel at for those tough enough to stick it out: Jackie (Uncle Fester) Coogan as a demented scientist, Spider-Babe Tandra Quinn's bizarre dance stylings, mutant midgets, florid narration, etc. And this is mandatory viewing for fans of that giant spider...

Mesa Of Lost Women is one of my favorite hunks of cheese! Jackie Coogan (yep, uncle Fester) is a mad scientist, working with petuitary gland transplants. He's successfully transplanted tarantula glands into human women (it doesn't work on men, only turns them into evil dwarves), turning them into mute amazons with extremely tacky wigs. Another scientist visits Dr. Fester and sees the horrible experiments. He refuses to help, so the head spider-woman "Taran-Tella" (Tandra Quinn) injects him with a serum that seems to make him bonkers. The good doctor ends up in the nuthouse, only to escape out a window. Anyway, he seeks revenge on Taran-Tella and shoots her (after she is allowed to dance in a saloon, causing hearts to race). The vengeful, nutty doctor then forces a pilot (Allan Nixon) to take him back to the mesa. Lots of spider-women and dwarves roam around aimlessly. A giant, stuffed tarantula flops onto a hapless victim or two, and fun is had by all. The ending is no surprise, but...

This is a cute romantic comedy from an era when movies were decent

The performances are excellent, and the premise, although unoriginal, is well played out. The problem, if any, is that the movie is a little short, hence the subpar character development. The streaming version here on Amazon contains a few short lacunae: bits and pieces of missing film, usually less than a second or so in duration, and only a few. It's just an old film, you know, that has not been preserved properly. But the audio is quite good, if a bit scratchy at times: again, not often and not too detracting from the entertainment. If you like these old B&W romcoms, and have a spare hour, then enjoy!

The Father, who is the love interest is rather on the old side, old enough to be a bit on the creepy side. What a sweet, cute romance; one of those good old 'afternoon classic' movies :) One to sit down after the vacuuming and dishes are done, put your feet up and enjoy some beverage and this movie :) Also just before bed. Nothing strenuous, cute plot with a few twists for fun. Decently shown and you'll smile. (I think, if I am reading it correctly, the "amazon" description is a bit 'off/backwards' or something. Seems the annulment thing is mixed up there in the info.)And the folks in the movie - well, all they really had to do was annul the right one from the right one! Gives a good 'run-around' laugh!) And I'll let you figure that one out while watching this really cute, sweet movie with decent characters and some fun! Make sure you catch the wink in the end!

Another Gripping Griffith Masterwork!
This film really should be on DVD because it has all the traditional Griffith hallmarks of drama, suspense and hard-hitting messages as many of his other popular films already on DVD. Not only that, but Griffith also wrote "Hearts of the World", went to the British front to film parts of this war saga and received personal good wishes from the British Prime Minister regarding this film. All this is shown briefly in a prologue, and then we are introduced to a peaceful French village and its inhabitants, in particular two American families and a young couple. Then we see how cruelly lives and families are torn apart when German troops conquer the village while its men are fighting in the trenches. Griffith's message is, of course, to show the brutality and utter uselessness of war and its effects on the innocent citizen who becomes the victim. In other words, it's not a light, happy film for mere entertainment, but still very rewarding in other aspects.

Forgettable Griffith photoplay
The weakest element of this presentation of HEARTS OF THE WORLD (1918) is the piano accompaniment which repeats a short phrase until the scene shifts, then a new little passage is beat to exhaustion. The best thing here is Dorothy Gish as an ebullient and perky street singer. Her sister Lillian has a more subdued role but still finds ways to clumsily overemote at times.

At one point, Lillian wanders a battlefield after the fighting stops. She finds her beaux (Robert Harron) lying near a trench, concludes he's been killed then lies down next to him, presumably for the night. The next day, stretcher bearers also encounter the prone Harron but realize that he's alive! Does this all strike you as incredibly unbelieveable? Yah, me too.

Let's reconsider that "weakest element" label, which simply must go to a very lame romantic plot. First that Bob would favor bland Lil to colorful Dot (who clearly has eyes for him), second that love conquers all (even mustard gas and...

TOP NOTCH McCOY WESTERN!
I have a fondness for Tim McCoy's Lightin' Bill Carson westerns, especially when Tim goes undercover using a disguise to solve the case.
This time the case takes 6 years as Tim/or Lightin' Bill becomes El Puma, a Robin Hood-like Mexican bandido. It seems Lightin' Bill was framed for a murder actually commited by Bad-Guy Link Benson (the great Ted Adams). So Bill goes undercover for 6 years...no matter, to get the goods on Benson in a 52 minute slam-bang, hard-ridin' fun-for-all action classic!
I'd rather watch a quickly made no-holds-barred action western like THE FIGHTING RENEGADE any day over a so-called "classic" like HIGH NOON which has way too much talking and way too little action.

This is a review for the "B" western, THE FIGHTING RENEGADE
which stars Tim McCoy in sort of a dual role.

Framed for murder six years earlier Bill Carson (Tim McCoy)
has changed his identity to El Puma, leader of a gang of
Mexican outlaws. Even though disguised as El Puma, Bill Carson
is still searching for the man who framed him.

When Carson comes across his former assistant Magpie, Ben Corbett,
Magpie sees to it that El Puma is hired to escort the scientific
expedition he is working for. However, when the professor is killed
with El Puma's knife, and the diary that has information as to the
location of the treasure is missing, El Puma is in hot water again.

Pretty well done "B" western with Tim McCoy doing a nice job as El Puma.
Good cast with Joyce Bryant, Dave O'Brien, Ben Corbett and Ted Adams.

The Hollywood star system is a funny game. Some stars shoot very, very brightly for a long time and then for some reason fade out and are forgotten forever.

Other stars - think James Dean - only do a couple of movies, but seem to remain popular forever.

Very Early Western

This is one of the earliest well produced sound westerns. As such, it works as the template for many similar films that would come out in the 1940s and even some modern films. The plot is the same as "Last Man Standing" where a group of outlaws take over an entire town adn a hero with a six gun has to come in and clean it up because the cops are too scared to do anything about it. Of course the hero rides into town, kills the bad guys and lets innocent people live in peace. There is a reason that after this film came out Hollywood kept making more movies with the same plot.

Our "Golden Age"club meets each Thursday to view movies from the last century (that is from the 30s and 40s, or even earlier years). We have many die-hard Johnny Mack Brown fans in our club and there was a near riot last week when it was announced that we would be viewing one of his classic Movies on DVD. There was-expectedly-a lot of backslapping and excited banter as the boys filed out of the room. Johnny's ability to hold your attention is outstanding and we felt we had spent our time profitably. What you see on the cover is not what you get.However,this movie was still entertaining enough.There are girls in a cellar that are used as playthings for two momma's boys who live with their mother(who we don't see till the end),one brother has the mind of a 5 year old. They have mommy issues that are reminiscent of Norman Bates but 1000's of light years away from the Hitchcock horror classic .They use dog leash collar chains when they take the girls out to play.Never do they chain any girls up.The monster on the cover is not in the movie and there are no bars,only a rack on a cellar window with a bunk bed.The house where most of the movie takes place is a neat nice looking home in a secluded part of a suburb.The torture is more mental then anything else.A twisted drama,so no whips and chains.Expect some gratuitous nudity without any S&M or gore(i.e. bloody torture) if your looking at buying "Girls in Chains"based solely on the cover alone.3 stars for some funny scenes.Good for a...

This DVD was exactly as I remembered the old film. The quality is about average but it's worth buying if you loved the original. I had actually forgotten the last 50 minutes and it was a whole new pleasant surprise to me! The story reminds me of Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho movie! Maybe it copied the story? A Bonus is the film is burned on the DVD twice in different screen size versions. The second is in the Features Section. This IS my No:1 Movie choice for a Thriller, Psycho, Porn, Titillation sexy Girl Movie!! Thank you for Distributing this DVD Version, and NOT censoring it more than the original. Please consider making a Modern version of this great Story!! It still scared me today!! My only disappointment was the Photo Gallery, only about 4 photos and they were Posters!

I wanted to see this movie ever since I saw the official trailer for "Schoolgirls in Chaiins" as a feature
on another CodeRed DVD. It's pretty low budget, but some parts are serious. In fact, this film had pretty descent acting,
which is a shock considering the type of movie it is. The video quality sucks though!! It's like an ancient VHS release!
This isn't actually a bad thing, since the grain and the static lines add some atmosphere and nolstalgia, but it appears
to be untouched whatsoever from the vhs transfer. The story itself is reminiscent of Psycho and Halloween, even though it predates Halloween by 5 years. Two insane brothers abduct young beautiful women and chain them up in the cellar, where they are mistreated and

APC Film "Let There Be Light"

Film was shot in a hospital in Long Island New York. When I worked for the Army Pictorial Center we were not permitted to release the film in part because the releases signed by the patients could not be found in the file files. The real reason was claimed to be that the US Government, at the time, was concerned with public reaction to the film showing soldiers who were "shell-shocked". It is unfortunate that the director of this film, Walter Houston, is no longer with us to see his important work released to the public.

AT ONCE BOTH VERY CREEPY AND VERY GOOD! A GREAT LESSON ON THE TRUE PRICE OF FREEDOM IF YOU DARE LOOK!
The patients come in shell shocked or what today is called Post Truamatic Stress Disordered PTSD and they leave better functioning battle scarred human beings. In this movie no veteran goes on to live sad, deluded and half crazy on the streets of the inner city. Nope the veterans here all readjust and are sent home to loving supportive families and or wives. the film puts one in mind of The Naked City in its attempt to honestly protray the journey of damaged fighting man back to civilized caring human being. You walk with the men on their journey seeing medical and mental health doctors (psychiatrists) go through the slow painstaking process of helping battle weary GI's rediscover and reassert their true honorable humanity.

Let There Be Light tries as hard as it can to give you a real world sense of what its like to come back from the hell of war broken as an army of doctors work tirelessly to make you well. Unfortunately Let There Be Light does not exactly have the...
Amazing work by Huston will humble your heart
Amazing work by Huston will humble your heart as you watch these real soldiers--not actors--work through what we now call Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. The medical specialists listened to the soldiers, bullied a little bit when necessary and treated them respectfully and honestly. Caring medical professionals used the meager tools of that era helping soldiers understand what happened to them, why they reacted as they did and how to cope with their issues.

I found out about Huston's documentary from a neurologist friend who knew of my interest in history. He too was impressed by Huston's attention to detail and artistic vision. Believe it or not, you will be watching a previously censored film here! After his own viewing, General George Marshall refused to release it to the public because he feared public backlash. Even President Truman did not know about it.

Pure Roasted Corn Before It Got Stale

It is really important to keep the age of the movie in mind. It is a "she done him wrong movie" and boy did that dame rack up the bodies.

The plot was filed with subtle jokes and old school twists. The budget was limited; you can tell that this was a stage bound production. There were two or three uncured hams but all in all a good kick back movie. If you have an hour to burn and are willing to take a step back in time it could be enjoyable to true film fanatics and historians.
